Intro to The Saelig Tales

The Saelig Tales (published  by Textualities in the anthology, ‘Magic Afoot’ in 2006) is partly an exploration of the nature of storytelling and the elusiveness of objective “truth” as expressed through narration. Language is of this planet, it consists of a set of symbols which themselves cannot approximate to anything beyond human perception. Yet somehow, as the New York City-based Scottish writer/intellectual, Alastair Reid, elucidated in a lecture he delivered in Edinburgh, these symbols are able to signify regions beyond themselves, regions that stretch toward the cold, blue light of infinity. Perhaps, in the Beckettsian sense, there is nothing else – yet surely that conclusion itself is symbolic. Much of my prose tends at times to strive for the poetic, not simply in the acoustic, sibilant sense, but in the figurative manner of song and storytelling being a form of two-way communal transfiguration. Behind every writer, there is a composer; within every reader there is a musician.
